Why should I choose Kate’s Driving School?
I will treat you as an individual and tailor your tuition to suit your needs, whether you are 17 or 70. It is important to me that my pupils don't just learn to pass the test but acquire the necessary skills for a lifetime of safe driving, and leave me as confident capable drivers.

What do I need to do before I can start driving?

You must have a Provisional Licence. You can apply for a provisional driving licence quickly and easily online or by completing the D1 application form available at most post offices. All applications made by filling in the D1 form will also require original documentation to be sent to the DVLA to confirm your identity. The minimum age which you can legally drive a car on the public roads is 17. If you are disabled and in receipt of mobility allowance, the minimum age is 16. Until the day you pass the practical part of the Driving Test you are not allowed to drive on your own. It is also worthwhile having an eyesight test to check that you meet the minimum eyesight standard for driving.

What kind of car do you use and why?
I currently use a Skoda Fabia which has air conditioning, power steering and a 1.9 turbo diesel engine. This provides a comfortable relaxed drive in a pleasant environment essential for effective learning.

How long are your lessons?
Lessons can be one or two hours long. Two hour lessons are more productive for both the learner and the instructor. Each lesson has a start - the briefing, and a settling in period - and an end - the recap, evaluation of what has been achieved etc; so the learning time on a 2 hour lesson is greater than in two 1 hour lessons.

How often should I have my lessons?
How often you have your lessons is entirely up to you. I recommend at least 1 session of 2 hours per week.

top

What is the cheapest way of booking my lessons?
You can cut the cost of learning to drive by taking advantage of block booking discounts. This will make the hourly price you pay cheaper the more lessons you book. I offer to block book lessons of 10 hours.

How many lessons will I need before I can take my practical test?
There is no set number of driving lessons you must have before sitting your practical test. Everyone is different and learn at different rates. However, those who pass their driving test have had, on average, about 45 hours of professional training, combined with 22 hours of private practice*. Candidates who combine professional instruction with private practice are also more successful on the test. *DSA statistic.

Do you teach intensive courses?
No. Intensive courses may sound like a good idea, but most people need time to absorb and reflect on what they learn. Regular tuition is important; 2 or 3 hours a week in the first few weeks is usually best.

top

Can a friend or relative teach me how to drive?
The Driving Standards Agency strongly recommends that you take lessons from an Approved Driving Instructor. If your friend or relative teaches you they must be over 21 years of age and have held a Full British Driving Licence for at least 3 years. It's worthwhile remembering too that learning with a friend or relative means you could pick up their bad habits.

Do you provide tuition in Automatic Cars?
No, I do not own an automatic tuition vehicle.

top

Do you provide tuition for people with physical disabilities?
I do not own a specially modified car.

top

Do you provide Refresher Courses for Qualified Drivers?
Yes, depending on your requirements lessons can be tailored to suit you. Most popular requests are for parking lessons, Motorway tuition, and confidence building.

top

Can I start driving lessons before I have passed my theory test?
Yes. I recommend you take practical lessons while preparing for your theory test. The combination of practical experience with theoretical learning can reinforce the subject making it easier to understand and remember. This should help you perform better at the theory test.

top

What should I study to pass the Theory Test?
There are many books to help you that cover the multiple questions, hazard perception section, and also the practical test. Others recommend books are ‘The Highway Code’ and ‘Know your traffic signs’. More details on all these books can be found on the DSA website, or the TSO Online Bookshop

top

Do you provide Theory Test Training?
I can help answer any question you have whilst studying for your theory test, and do some mock questions if necessary.

top

Do you teach Pass Plus?
Yes. Pass Plus is a six hour training course designed to improve your skills in specific areas, such as motorway and town driving, driving at night time and driving in bad weather conditions. I strongly encourage my pupils to take the DSA Pass Plus course. Although significant savings can be made on motor insurance for those who complete the course - it is not pass or fail. The real benefit is that you will be a safer driver after you complete the course.
